The Rostov-on-Don volunteer center based at the Don State Technical University has received about 7,500 applications and selected 1,322 to become 2018 FIFA World Cup volunteers, the university's Rector Besarion Meskhi said during a news conference at the City Press Center.
"Of these volunteers, 76 percent are young people aged 18-25, 19 percent are people aged 26-40, and four percent are aged 41-60, with another one percent being "silver" volunteers: people over 60," Meskhi noted.
He added that the Don State Technical University had become a federal center for training volunteers on a competitive basis.
Rector of the Southern Federal University Marina Borovskaya added that today the center supports people of different ages who want to become volunteers.
"There are many art experts among our colleagues, who can say a lot of things about the city that not many local residents know. It would be stupid to refuse their help during the World Cup," she said.
Borovskaya also said that many older people studied foreign languages such as Spanish or German when they were students, and now they are involved in the work with foreign World Cup fans.
