Tourist numbers in Nizhny Novgorod up by 20 percent during 2018 FIFA World Cup

The 2018 FIFA World Cup has contributed to an increase in the number of tourists and the development of tourism in Nizhny Novgorod, Director of the Nizhny Novgorod Region Department for Tourism Development and Folk Crafts Alexei Alyokhin said at the City Press Center.

"At present, during the World Cup, we are witnessing a 20 percent increase in the tourist flow, but we won't have the final figures until later," Alyokhin said.

According to Alyokhin, the larger number of hotels in the city will also contribute to further growth in tourism.

"39 hotels of various types were built for the World Cup; one of them is a five-star hotel with 176 rooms, one a four-star, with 143 rooms, and there are two three-star hotels with 192 and 30 rooms. Over 500 jobs have been created," Alyokhin said.

There are currently 580 various types of accommodation places in the region.

"351 hotels were categorized. Compared to 2016, there are 111.7 percent more such places in the region and the volume of services grew by 105 percent. 2.5 million people visited the Nizhny Novgorod Region in 2017, and the tourist flow was 1.5 million," Alyokhin said.

With regard to the distinction between visitors and tourists, those visiting are defined as travelers who arrive in the city, view its landmarks but do not stay at hotels.
