The 2018 FIFA World Cup RussiaTM will give a powerful boost to the development of sports in the country, member of the State Duma Committee on Physical Fitness, Sports, Tourism and Youth Affairs and two-time Olympic biathlon champion, said at the City Press Center in Ekaterinburg.
"Such events definitely give momentum to the development of any sort of sports. What we like to see in football is not only the play but also the athletes' strong will and how they put their very heart and soul into fighting for victory. This is a good example for boys and girls of any age," Chepikov said.
Yelena Chechunova, Chair of the Sverdlovsk Region Legislative Assembly's Committee on Youth Policy, Physical Fitness, Sport and Tourism, added that the World Cup would lead to the development of new types of sports.
"There are active people in Ekaterinburg who are creating new types of sports, for example, [a racquet game] polylop. Its creators say it is the least hazardous sport. You can play it at sports grounds in the city center. It is good for both children and adults, and the equipment is not expensive. The number of polylop players has increased many times over during the World Cup," Chechunova said.
