Chairman of the State Committee of Tatarstan for Tourism Sergei Ivanov cited the statistics for inbound tourism in the region during the 2018 FIFA World Cup while summarizing the preliminary results of the regional tourism sector at a news conference at the Kazan City Press Center.
The average occupancy at hotels during the tournament was 81%, Ivanov noted. On the days of the matches, it rose to 91.5%, and on June 30 (the day France played Argentina) and July 6 (Brazil vs. Belgium) it reached almost 100%. Hotels were 60% fuller on average than in the same period last year, he stressed.
During the tournament in Kazan, fans used all of the city's 196 accommodation facilities. In addition, tourists stayed in the neighboring towns of Zelenodolsk, Naberezhnye Chelny, Cheboksary, Yoshkar-Ola and Ulyanovsk.
According to Ivanov, guests of Kazan also stayed at a special site for motorhomes. Overall, 16 motorhomes of Russian fans as well as guests from Switzerland, Colombia and Germany, were registered in the city.
"According to our estimates, over 300,000 tourists from 36 countries visited Tatarstan during the World Cup," Ivanov said, adding that 58% of them were fans from Russia and 42% were foreigners.
The most popular excursions among tourists were tours of Kazan, Sviyazhsk and Great Bolgar. In the capital of Tatarstan, guests visited the Temple of All Religions (7,000 people from different countries) and the Chak-chak Museum.
"In general, I think Tatarstan's tourist industry has successfully coped with the World Cup," Ivanov concluded.
