Tatarstan Minister of Sport Vladimir Leonov spoke about his impressions of the 2018 FIFA World Cup and summarized the preliminary results of the tournament at the Kazan City Press Center.
First of all, Leonov thanked the Russian national team for its successful performance.
"We surpassed ourselves, and we had the chance to move even further," he said.
According to the minister, the World Cup in Russia brought spectators interesting matches and a remarkable football festival.
"The final match was held yesterday, and we can say that Russia has coped well with hosting the World Cup and brought football to a new organizational level," Leonov said. "We held six unbelievable and spectacular matches. The world champion, the French team, played at Kazan Arena twice."
Leonov also noted that during the World Cup, legends of world football visited Tatarstan and the teams of Australia, Japan and Colombia stayed there. He said that he personally met with the representatives of those teams and that they praised the service, the stadium and the tournament logistics, in particular, the work of the airport. He added that there were no flight delays during the tournament despite the fact that the passenger flow was 1.5-2 times larger than during the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.
Leonov emphasized that the tournament will leave a great legacy and the stadium in Kazan is one of the best in Russia. Moreover, additional training fields were prepared for the World Cup, and they will be used by young football players.
Answering a question about how Kazan Arena will be used after the Cup, Leonov said that the arena is the home stadium for FC Rubin, but it will also host other large events.
"Beyonce performed yesterday at Stade de France. We need to hold such events too. Kazan Arena is a unique stadium which can accommodate over 40,000 people for some major events," Leonov said.
The minister added that a concept for a renovated Tatarstan Museum of Sports is being developed. The museum will be located in the volunteer center premises inside the stadium.
